Niigata is facing on the Sea of Japan.
A major industry is agriculture. The area around Uonuma is known for producing the Koshihikari(rice) variety, widely considered to be the highest-quality rice produced in Japan. Off course produce sake(Japanese rice wine).
One of the most heaviest snow area. There are many ski resorts in the alpines of Myoko plateau and Echigo-yuzawa, after that enjoy onsen.
Crude oil is produced in Niigata Prefecture, although Japan relies heavily on petroleum imported from other countries.
On Sado island, an active gold mine was there, it was closed in1989.
Niigata Prefecture may have been the first area in Japan to produce knitted textiles.
